Narcissistic Culture and the Empathy Gap

As capitalism implodes and cannibalizes on itself from greedy bond holders (who themselves avoided paying the proper amount of taxes), you have to ask yourself; what the hell is wrong with our society?

What do we, as a people, value? The problem is we as a society doesn’t value “we” at all, we only value “me”. We are a narcissist culture dependent upon narcissistic supply; adulation, praise, attention, presenting a strong false self, to the world in order to hide a weak insecure true self.

Ambition, drive, frenetic activity all are rooted in useless and futile efforts. As if by our very activities, we can deny our own inevitable mortality or our own humanity. We have been taught by consumer culture and capitalism that we are unique, omniscient and omnipresent; at least in our own minds. Community is discouraged; any strong urges towards community is seen as “socialist” or “communist”.

Instead a form of individualism with an emphasis on self worship, has taught us to not empathize with our fellow human beings.  We concentrate on our own game, closing our eyes to the rising tide of suffering that surrounds us. Here in America one in every five children goes to bed hungry. Joblessness and poverty are at all times highs.  Families are losing their homes while major cuts are being slashed at social services.  At the same time, tools of mass distraction are implemented; keeping us from seeing the reality of what is occurring: face book, popular music, celebrity stalking, status symbols. Narcissists extract supply from the vehicle they drive, the names they drop and what they emulate from others in an attempt to gain popularity. In the meantime they don’t even know who they actually are. They’re empty inside; merely reflections of what attributes they have stolen from others.

America is like that, we are all about our Hollywood movies, our fast flashy cars and fashion, our “exceptionalism”. Policemen of the universe, it is America’s job to save or punish everyone. We are omniscient and omnipresent. Our corporate oligarchs, plutocrats, NSA operatives, have their collective tentacles in every sweatshop, banana republic, and environmental disaster globally.  We are an abusive Narcissistic culture treating the rest of the world like crap; because we are “entitled” too. After all we are better than everyone else aren’t we? We deserve it! Our country is unique set apart from others. We treat our citizens like dirt even near Christmas. At this moment we have right wing congressmen calling for more cuts to food stamps, to the social safety net, to our schools, while fracking the hell out of the climate.

We live in a fantasy world where we are the best and the brightest when nothing could be further from the truth. The Middle East should be thankful we take the time to care enough to send a drone! Because like Hallmark, we care to send the very best!

Quick agree with us or you are not our friend! Yet as all the wealth is siphoned off to the top %1 and the middle class evaporates, we still take the time to call our fellow citizens in need “lazy”, “worthless” ; while we call banksters like Jamie Diamond “genius” and “job creators”. We equate financial success with morality; when quite often it is the exact opposite.

Fox News thinks the Pope is on dope, because he calls out this ponzi scheme we call Capitalism, an unsustainable system that says profit is more important than anything. And like a cancer, this dependence on infinite growth is killing us. So what do we do about it? We need to reject pathological Narcissism in all its forms and embrace empathy. Learning to care what happens to our fellow man, our environment will help rescue us as a species and allow us to avoid self annihilation. If we truly believe we are made in the image of God, and that God is love, then we must learn to love one another more than we do ourselves.

This is how we will survive. The profit motive and monetary system is the Mark of the Beast, and those who are deeply invested in those things, are divested in all that is true, good, and beautiful. Money is the currency of death.

So I leave you with this, study the DSMV of pathological narcissistic personality disorder closely. Avoid and denounce any person, group, or culture that reflects these traits and try to be the opposite. If you have it, cure yourself, I did. All it takes is losing absolutely everything, working like hell to get it all back and then some, finding God, while learning what that truly means and how it happened.

Because you were a selfish a#$h***, that’s why.

From Wikipedia

“Symptoms of this disorder, as defined by the DSM-IV-TR include:[1]

  • Expects to be recognized as superior and special, without superior accomplishments
  • Expects constant attention, admiration and positive reinforcement from others
  • Envies others and believes others envy him/her
  • Is preoccupied with thoughts and fantasies of great success, enormous attractiveness, power, intelligence
  • Lacks the ability to empathize with the feelings or desires of others
  • Is arrogant in attitudes and behavior
  • Has expectations of special treatment that are unrealistic

Other symptoms in addition to the ones defined by DSM-IV-TR include: Is interpersonally exploitative, i.e., takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends, has trouble keeping healthy relationships with others, easily hurt or rejected, appears unemotional, and exaggerating special achievements and talents, setting unrealistic goals for himself/herself [7]

Narcissistic personality disorder is characterized by dramatic, emotional behavior, and an overinflated sense of self-importance which is in the same category as antisocial and borderline personality disorders.[8]

In addition to these symptoms, the person may display arrogance, show superiority, and seek power.[9] The symptoms of narcissistic personality disorder can be similar to the traits of individuals with strong self-esteem and confidence; differentiation occurs when the underlying psychological structures of these traits are considered pathological. Narcissists have such an elevated sense of self-worth that they value themselves as inherently better than others, when in reality they have a fragile self-esteem, cannot handle criticism, and will often try to compensate for this inner fragility by belittling or disparaging others in an attempt to validate their own self-worth. Comments and criticisms about others are vicious from sufferers of NPD, in an attempt to boost their own poor self-esteem.[10]

Another symptom a narcissist will have is a lack of empathy. They are unable to relate, understand, and rationalize the feelings of others."
