Doug Powell has not received any gifts yet
Professional Mosaic Artist Doug Powell (56) has mastered an unusual art form. Mosaic portraits and murals created with cast-off computer keys. Powell, who has been studying and perfecting his methods for many years, uses up cycled computer keys from tens of thousands of computer keyboards and arranges the retired caps using their individual character and color to complete the artwork.
His art is collected by Ripley's “Believe It Or Not!” and is on display in numerous Museums from Hollywood California to Times Square, New York City as well as Canada, The United Kingdom (London) and Amsterdam Holland. Since 2010, Ripley's and Powell have transacted dozens of works of art including mural like portraits of John Lennon, Steve Jobs, Frankenstein, Statue of Liberty, John F Kennedy and most recently, Princess Leia.
Doug won FIRST PLACE awards in 2013 and 2015 at the Orlando International Airport in The National Arts Program Art Event sponsored by the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority and won BEST OF SHOW at the 42nd annual GREAT DAY IN THE COUNTRY ART FESTIVAL, Oviedo Florida sponsored by the GFWC in 2015.
Doug was commissioned in 2015 to create a 7’ x 14’ abstract mural out of 24,000 computer keys for the Marriott Resort Hotel in Santa Clara, California. Other commissions include a 7’ x 7’ portrait of Mary Kay Ash created out of 11,800 Lipstick caps for the MARY KAY Corporation in Dallas Texas in 2016 and most recently an 8’ x 7’ portrait of Co-Founder Gordon Moore for the INTEL Corporation in Santa Clara California. 11,000 up-cycled computer keys completed this highly detailed piece.
In 2017, Powell exhibited in ART BASEL MIAMI and was featured in the SPECTRUM MIAMI ART SHOW. Not only was the show a great success, but he received the 2017 Spectrum Miami Art Show DIRECTORS’ AWARD. His works are currently exhibiting with the GUARISCO GALLERY in Washington DC.
