The Downtown Art’s District is proud to present Lydia Lunch “So Real It Hurts” exhibition. Exhibit opens Thursday, September 17, 2015, 6-9pm. The exhibition runs through October 9, 2015. Opening events will continue throughout the weekend with live performances at the Gallery at Avalon Island and CityArts Factory as well as a live artist talk.

Passionate, confrontational and bold, whether attacking the patriarchy and their pornographic war mongering, turning the sexual into the political or whispering a love song to the broken hearted, her fierce energy and rapid fire delivery lend testament to her warrior nature. She has released too many musical projects to tally, has toured for decades, curated dozens of shows, written half a dozen books, and simply refuses to shut up. “I describe myself as a confrontationalist,” she says. “I prefer not to be pigeon holed by generic labels like feminist and have never considered myself ‘punk.”

Lydia Lunch’s So Real It Hurts exhibition surveys the sweep of Lunch’s career from her days as a teenage runaway and instigator of No Wave to the present. The exhibit collections include Ephemera, a compilation of photos, posters and letters, including some of her most notorious collaborators in music, spoken word, and literature; The War is Never Over, a series of photographs about war its cycle of death and destruction; and You Are Not Safe In Your Own Home, a total environment, a violent collision of damaged body parts and tortured emotion.

Finally, the world may have caught up to what Lydia Lunch has been doing all along. She’s never been out to shock – she’s been out to document. Like all great artists, she is equal parts reporter and visionary. Because all our nightmares are headlines now. – Jerry Stahl
